The Integrated Autism Service (IAS) is a pioneering new service for children and adults with autism across Bridgend, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot helping to drive up standards and deliver support services of the best quality to the people who need them. This new service is part of a national drive to improve services for those with autism and their families, parents and carers in Wales and will be a valuable addition to the range of other existing support services available across the Western Bay region.

The regional IAS is being delivered via the Western Bay Health and Social Care Collaborative – a partnership initiative between the ABMU Health Board and Councils in Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea. Its aim is to create a flexible service that eliminates existing barriers to support and bring about positive outcomes for people of all ages who have been diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

Some of the key functions of the IAS will be to provide timely diagnosis for adults, support across the lifespan before a person reaches crisis-point, and to offer information, advice and support to service users and their families. The overall drive for the service nationally is to increase awareness and understanding of autism in all aspects and it will also deliver a training and development programme for people with autism, their families, parents and carers and for professionals in order to help improve people’s confidence and personal wellbeing. Ultimately, it will be a service for people with autism who do not have access to core services and currently ‘fall between the cracks’ of service provision.
