Supporting an autistic young woman awaiting support from mental health services

Actions and outcomes

Gwent IAS provided 1:1 Support Intervention for a young adult diagnosed as autistic.

The person was brought to the top of waiting list and it was immediately clear that she needed support. As a child she had extensive notes from CAMHs, with the main issues being low confidence, an eating disorder and body image issues.

Since receiving a diagnosis from Gwent IAS, the young woman reported that she felt she understood herself better, which was positive, but she was starting to struggle with her mental health. Prior to starting the intervention, she had been referred to Primary Care Mental Health Support Service and later to Secondary Mental Health Services.

She was assessed by both these services during the time she was supported by Gwent IAS, but there was a waiting list for interventions. In the meantime, Gwent IAS worked together with the young woman to formulate a support plan for her. This included the following:

  • Regular phone, walk and talk sessions or home visits or virtual sessions.
  • Completed the Outcome Star to identify goals.
  • Identified IAS Groups she would like to try – e.g. Outdoor Group.
  • Worked on the positives and what she could do to improve her situation.
  • Liaison with family so that her close network understood her support goals.
  • Agreeing mini goals for her to focus on.
  • Suggestions to improve her daily living around sleep, anxiety with regards Ukraine War and how to manage Social Anxiety.
  • Advice and Consultation from clinical psychologist for person supporting.

Feedback

Lessons Learned

Gwent IAS felt this support worked because it was at a good time in the client’s life, and they worked together to agree personal goals.  It also worked because this person was willing to listen and try suggestions.

Gwent IAS learned that it’s important to take into account other health problems, because these too can make life difficult for people.
