Supporting a family to better understand autism

Actions and outcomes

R self-referred to North Wales IAS for parental support. R has an 11-year-old son, who was newly diagnosed. R requested support around transition to Secondary school and guidance on sensory and sleep issues, and also social groups that she could attend with her son.

R also attended an Autism Information Event that North Wales IAS had organised and found the talks given by the clinicians to be very helpful, as well as gathering information from the numerous information stands also present.

North Wales IAS also shared some ideas with R on social stories to try with her son and details of the nearest social group for him. They also suggested some physical activity in the mornings before school e.g. carrying wood into the house, running around for 5 minutes before getting in the car.

R stated that the links to Autismwales.org that North Wales IAS gave to her proved very useful and that she’d shared them with other family members too. Her husband and father-in-law attended a recent coffee hub also as they were keen to gather some information and ask some questions about autism.

Feedback

“Thank you very much for the event last week, it really was great to attend such an event – and to learn more.”

Thank you for all your support this year, and for all the links and ideas that you have presented to us. Discovering the group for my son to socialise means so much. Thank you very much.”

Lessons Learned

“Having supported R and her family over a number of months, I realised that by sharing information in a timely fashion, that I didn’t overwhelm them, and they were able to process the information and suggestions better.”
