Gwent IAS/Gwent Wildlife ‘Outdoor Group’: A Statutory and 3rd Sector Partnership

Actions and outcomes

Gwent IAS and Gwent Wildlife set up an Outdoor Group. The group consisted of 7 group members.

The group addresses the following:

  • Mental and Physical Wellbeing
  • Social Isolation
  • Social Skills
  • Problem-Solving
  • Teamwork
  • Motivation
  • Weekly Structure
  • Connecting with Nature and Learning

This group covers all the 5-Ways to Wellbeing and more.

The outcome for the individuals is difficult to measure but out of all the group members who were previously known to the service, none have needed any further interventions.

Some members of the group are clearly more at ease in this social situation than others, but a few individuals have been observed to be more confident in other social environments i.e., they are more vocal within a group setting and more confident to express their opinions.

During the group sessions, one person expressed an interest in volunteering with Gwent Wildlife and they have now volunteered with the organisation on numerous occasions.

Feedback

Members reported that they enjoyed the group, and that they had found it beneficial.

With the individual who volunteered for Gwent Wildlife outside of the group, the leader of the organisation felt that this person managed well within a new group setting and participated fully in the volunteering activity.

Group members have asked when the Group is due to meet again, suggesting that it was enjoyable and successful.

Lessons Learned

They planned on moving the group to different locations to meet the needs of a wider group of people.  This did make it easier for a couple of people to attend but there were some people who could not travel the extra distance so had to end involvement.

In future, the organisers have decided that the group will meet in a new venue that is between both locations, and hopefully this will attract new people and enable some people to travel.

Ultimately, it is difficult to meet everyone’s needs e.g. venue locations, but if location is a barrier for people, Gwent IAS support members with their travel plans.
