Mountain Movers is an ALN friendly educational community providing opportunities to families electively home educating in particular but not exclusively children with a disability. We aim to be inclusive of all needs and
abilities, with a goal to provide support and sessions designed for siblings of children with disability as well.

We are run by experienced home educators who are or have home educated a child with a disability. Our aim is to provide structured learning opportunities, inclusive sports and arts provisions as well as being a place of friendship, support and advocacy.

We hold a number of different sessions per week at different venues in the South Wales area of the UK. As a registered ASDAN centre, we offer ASDAN courses to all UK home educators.

We hope to reduce social isolation of both children and their families by providing a regular safe and confidential setting to facilitate the development of social skills as well as providing support, advice and signposting to
additional services.

We aspire to improve the skills and knowledge of parent/carers who have taken responsibility to provide the education for their children by providing access to training, advice and support so they are better equipped to educate their children in a rounded and informed manner.

We hope through the sharing of educational resources and the facilitation of educational opportunities and training, to reduce poverty and ease the financial burden faced by electively home educating families.

National Star launched its first education provision at Mamhilad, Torfaen, in September 2016. It is designed for young people with complex and multiple learning and physical disabilities, offering a sensory-based curriculum and a high level of care and support.

Our curriculum is individualised to each learner, focusing on developing independence, life skills, communication / social skills and preparing for life after college. Individualised programmes can include creative arts (art, music, IT, photography and multimedia), horticulture, cooking, sensory stories and leisure and accredited qualifications.

Welsh language and culture form a key part of the programme and include literacy, numeracy and IT.

Everyone has different abilities and requirements, and we will work with you to create programmes that meet your needs and goals. Our experienced team of staff will support you every step of the way to develop the skills and interests that are important to you. Your dedicated tutor will be on hand to ensure that you are able to get the very best out of life at college.

Our environment promotes interest-led learning, sensory approaches and specialised therapeutic support, ensuring individual needs are fully met.

Within hospital environments we are able to offer a level 2 and a level 3 apprenticeship in Clinical Healthcare Support. Our Health and Social Care core and practice apprenticeship qualifications are suitable for individuals working in care settings such as Domiciliary care, Residential Care homes, Nursing homes, Dementia Care homes and organisations that support individuals with both physical Autism Aware Org Application disabilities, learning disabilities and mental health difficulties. We also offer a wide range of qualifications within the primary care sector. This includes individuals who are working in General Practice, such as GP surgeries, Pharmacies, District nursing and Dental Care. Our course levels range from Level 2- 5 . We offer both apprenticeships, certificates and stand-alone course, in order to meet the needs of the sector and enhance individuals’ skills and continued professional development. All learners are given the opportunity to undertake these qualifications in the language of their choice. This includes providing clear and concise instructions, avoiding idioms, metaphors, and similes, and being mindful of background noise, as well as the effects of heat and lighting on learners with Autism. The department and delivering tutors now have a better understanding of Autism and the difficulties associated with communication, such as turn[1]taking and avoiding eye contact, as well as sensory and repetitive behaviour and mental health concerns. The animated films and advice sheets are extremely effective in providing information for teaching staff to adapt and support autistic learners in Further Education.

The engineering department at Rhos campus delivers a variety of courses including Level 1 & 2 Performing engineering operations, Level 2 & 3 Academic and craft qualifications.  This leads to progressing to university or becoming an apprentice.

We are the UK Training centre for RWE renewables apprentices, and we run a full-time course at the college for 2 years and then learners complete a year in industry with continued support from us. 

We have extra apprentices that come to college one day a week released from their employer.  We also offer higher education (HE) courses in a Higher National Diploma (HND) and a Higher National Certificate (HNC) in general engineering and degree apprentices in partnership with Bangor university.  

Over in Rhyl we have the motor vehicle area and service and repair section.  Vehicle body repair and fabrication and welding.  We offer level 1, 2 & 3 qualifications, and apprentice opportunities.

In both Rhos and Rhyl, we offer a number of commercial courses for industry including Automotive technician accreditation and Robotics.

 Our Work based Learning Childcare Department offers a variety of courses to accommodate all childcare provision across North Wales.

We predominantly offer courses in the Gwynedd/ Anglesey/Conwy and Denbighshire areas.

For schools we offer the Supporting Teaching and Learning qualification.  The course is suitable for primary/Secondary and Special Needs schools. Teaching assistants who work in various roles and support whole classrooms, support pupils who have one to one additional needs.  Teaching assistants can apply for a level 2 course if they are new to the role or do not have additional responsibilities.

More experienced teaching assistants who have additional responsibility for planning/supporting groups can apply for the level 3 course.

Our Children’s Play Learning and Development qualification is suitable for childcare workers who support in day nurseries, playgroups and in the foundation phase classes at primary schools and is available at level 2 and 3.

The Play work qualification is available for playworkers who support after school and holiday clubs. The course is available at level 2 and 3. We also offer a level 3 Transition award for learners who already hold a level 3 Childcare qualification.

We can offer qualifications from level 2 through to level 5. We can offer apprenticeships and stand-alone courses to support people in their career.

All the provision that is on offer is delivered by experienced and qualified assessors to meet the needs of the sector and is available bilingually to support the learners to complete their course in the language of their choice.

Wrexham Flying Start is a Welsh Government funded programme for children aged from 0 years up until their 4th birthday and their parents/carers, who live in certain geographical parts of Wrexham or via an outreach referral. The aim of the programme is to help children to have the best possible start in life for their future growth and development. Flying Start is child focussed and supports parents/carers to provide the most positive environment for their children’s wellbeing. Through early identification of needs and provision of early support, Flying Start aims to improve the outcomes for children and young people and their future life. The service provides intensive health visiting support, support for early language development, parenting support and the provision of funded high quality childcare for children age 2 to 3 years. All Flying start services are free to families.

Flying Start families are offered:

  • Home visiting from the multi-disciplinary Health and Parenting Team including an enhanced Health Visiting Service
  • Access to parenting support and parenting groups
  • Funded quality part-time childcare for 2-3 year olds
  • Early speech, language and communication support
